Delivering software engineering education through LEGO robotics

Abstract: The number of software engineering jobs is expected to grow faster than all other jobs over the next decade.STEM education is an important initiative to encourage young students to develop the skills they require to succeed in these positions. The First Lego League sponsors annual tournaments in which students must build and program a robot to accomplish various tasks in order to score points. Previously, the students had not used any process or documentation when developing the programs to rnn on the robot. T… Show more

“…The robot runs on a mat and the team must design and program the robot to score as many points as possible in a period of time of two and a half minutes. The FLL is a good way to foster children’s interest towards the disciplines embraced by the STEM education: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, [ 7 ]. Moreover, LEGO robots have been proven helpful in the teaching of subjects and skills at school such as mathematical and computational thinking [ 2 ].…”

“…Thus, we have embedded a design-implement task in our proposed approach, that uses LEGO Mindstorms TM to simulate a real-world environment regarding technical challenges in software development. LEGO Mindstorms TM has been used previously in higher education to teach students in advanced software engineering project courses [35,58], or embedded systems [28].…”
