Tumor-associated immune system cells secrete protease and cytokines that can inhibit the immune response. In particular, T-cell effector functions could be inhibited, potentially causing an increase in parasitic infestations. Demodex species are common inhabitants of normal hair follicles. Humans are the specific host for two species Demodex folliculorum and D. brevis. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence and infestation of D. folliculorum and D. brevis in patients with cancer. In the present study, 101 patients with cancer were selected from among patients who were diagnosed and treated for cancer. The cancer patients were divided into four groups according to cancer type. Slides were examined for parasites using light microscopy at magnifications of ×40 and ×100. Infestation was defined as having at least five living parasites/cm 2 of skin. The ages of the patients with cancer ranged between 38 and 82 years, with a mean of 65.5±10.1 years. It was determined that 77 of the 101 (76.2%) cancer patients were positive for Demodex species. Infestation was positive in 18 (47.4%) of the 38 cases in the breast cancer group, 7 (29.2%) of the 24 cases in the lung cancer group, 5 (18.5%) of the 27 cases in the gastrointestinal system cancer group, and 2 (16.7%) of the 12 cases in the urogenital system cancer group. Results showed that the rate of Demodex species infestation was higher in patients with breast cancer. Thus, cancer -and particularly breast cancer -is a risk factor for Demodex species infestation.

Demodex mites colonized the hair follicles and sebaceous glands of mammals millions of years ago and have remained relatively unchanged in this protected ecologic niche since then. The host immune system detects and tolerates their presence. Toll-like receptor-2 of keratinocytes has been demonstrated to recognize mite chitin and to elicit an innate immune response. The subsequent acquired immune response is poorly understood at present, but there is experimental and clinical evidence that this is the main mechanism in the control of mite proliferation. A transgenic mouse model (STAT(-/-) /CD28(-/-) ) has demonstrated that the immune response is complex, probably involving both cellular and humoral mechanisms and requiring the role of co-stimulatory molecules (CD28). It is known that a genetic predisposition for developing canine juvenile generalized demodicosis exists; however, the primary defect leading to the disease remains unknown. Once the mite proliferation is advanced, dogs show a phenotype that is similar to the T-cell exhaustion characterized by low interleukin-2 production and high interleukin-10 and transforming growth factor-β production by lymphocytes, as described in other viral and parasitic diseases. Acaricidal treatment (macrocyclic lactones) decreases the antigenic load and reverses T-cell exhaustion, leading to a clinical cure. Although in recent years there have been significant advances in the management and understanding of this important and complex canine disease, more research in areas such as the aetiology of the genetic predisposition and the immune control of the mite populations is clearly needed.

Öğrencileri ve onunla tanışan kişilerin "sert mizaca sahip bir kişi" olarak tarif ettikleri Mehmet Nazif Şahinoğlu, 1936 yılında Trabzon'un Vakfıkebir ilçesinin Güney (Esentepe) Köyünde dünyaya gelmiştir. İlkokulu İstanbul'da dışarıdan okuduktan sonra, sırasıyla 1959 yılında Pertevniyal Lisesinden ve 1960 yılında da İmam-Hatip Lisesinden mezun olmuştur. 1963 yılında İstanbul Üniversitesi Arap-Fars Filolojisinden mezun olduktan sonra İstanbul'da seçkin hocalardan dini ilimler konusunda dersler almıştır. 1964 senesinde, akademik hayatının 29 yılını geçireceği Erzurum Atatürk Üniversitesi'nde göreve başlamıştır. Doktorasını burada tamamlamış ve askerlik vazifesinden sonra bir yıl İran'da, iki yıla yakın Fransa'da kalmıştır. 1979'da Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nde Michigan Üniversitesi'nde altı ay süreyle görev yapmıştır. Otuzu aşkın ansiklopedi maddesi kaleme alan Nazif Şahinoğlu Hoca, 1983 yılında profesör olmasına rağmen bu kadroya ataması ancak üç yıl sonra yapılmıştır. Şahinoğlu, Atatürk Üniversitesi'nden ayrıldıktan sonra 1994 yılında Kırıkkale Üniversitesi'ne geçti. Türkiye'de siyasette, akademide ve toplumsal hayatta acı hadiselerin yaşandığı 28 Şubat postmodern darbesi döneminde Kırıkkale Üniversitesi rektörü Beşir Atalay'ın emekliliğe mecbur edilmesi sonucunda, Nazif Şahinoğlu da 1999 yılında emekliliğe ayrılmıştır.
