Demographic Correlates of Acculturation and Sociocultural Adaptation

Abstract: This study examined the relationship between international and domestic students' demographic factors on acculturation and sociocultural adaptation. It also examined the extent to which cultural values, uncertainty avoidance (UA) and power distance (PD), might explain two types of sociocultural adaptation: social interaction and localizing. A sample of 207 international and 173 domestic students from a northern California university completed a self-report survey. As expected, international students had higher… Show more

“…Scientists Elliot D.L., Kobayashi S. on the basis of a qualitative study examine the experience of academic leaders and foreign graduate students regarding academic and psychosocial adaptation in a new cultural environment and emphasize the importance of intercultural aspects of mentoring of academic leaders [5]. This emphasizes the importance of curatorial service, mentoring and ensuring constructive intercultural communications and tolerance, especially during the period of adaptation of students and graduate students to study at a university [6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13].…”

“…The findings of this study prompt important points of consideration that mirror, challenge, and enhance existing findings in the literature. In recent years, scholars have increasingly realized that higher education institutions and their members should adapt to different demographics of college students (Güzel & Glazer, 2019). Earlier deficit-minded approaches to college student success assumed that lack of success was a student's fault, which inherently exonerated institutions from responsibility (Clycq Nouwen & Vanderbroucke, 2014).…”

“…Figure 3 represents the coded preferences from a content analysis of interview responses of both non-Nigerian and Nigerian migrants within the local area. The measuring yardstick from reputable writers in acculturation (Ward & Kennedy, 1994;Berry, 1997;Ward & Rana-Deuba, 2009;Berry, 2005;Güzel & Glazer, 2019) was adopted as a guiding framework to measure the process of acculturation of the migrants. We found migrant acculturation in this area to be profoundly influenced by (1) migrant adaptation while unconsciously pursuing assimilation, (2) migrant tendency to blend original identity with local culture (3) strong identifications with the host community, and (4) migrant localising and interaction.…”
