Demonstration of Eimeria tenella in Bursa of Fabricius of Chickens

Abstract: Coccidial life-cytle stages were detected in the bursa of Fabricius of broiler chickens inoculated with Eimeria tenella, whether or not the chickens had previously been infected with infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). Chickens infected only with E. tenella had developing parasites in the lining epithelium, whereas chickens with both infections had gametocytes also in the epithelial cells surrounding numerous degenerating bursal cysts.

“…This is in accordance with the observations of Anderson et al (1976) & Majaro (1993 that intestinal mucosa of the birds severely infected with coccidian species showed deeply red lesions of variable sizes especially in the small intestine and caecum due to the large number of oocysts ingested.…”

“…The integrity of bursa and other lymphoid tissues is critical for proper immune modification (4). In the present study the numerical increase in the relative weight of bursa of Fabricius and the significant increase in the length, width, and area of its lymphoid follicles in Eimeria challenged broilers might be due to the enlargement of its epithelium resulted from developing of Eimeria tenella in the bursa of Fabricius (6,18). “…Several reports showed high seroprevalence of T. gondii in chickens worldwide [ 2 4 ]. In contrast, E. tenella is very host-specific and monoxenous, infecting particularly the caecal mucosa of chicken [ 5 , 6 ].…”
