Density and diversity of birds in the wetlands of Yankari Game Reserve Bauchi Nigeria

Abstract: The biological, chemical, and physical operations and attributes of wetlands are vital in facilitating food resources, water, and shelter, which many terrestrial bird and waterbird species rely on for their daily requirments. Wetlands in Yankari Game Reserve, Nigeria are key stone ecosystem that provides a stopover, breeding and/or foraging platform for migratory and resident birds. This study determined the density and diversity of birds in the wetlands of Yankari Game Reserve. Ten wetlands within the reserve… Show more

“…The variation in the distribution of waterbirds in different habitats is attributed to prime habitat preference: "Each species may have a different habitat preference and feed throughout this habitat on all kinds of food, or all the species may share the entire habitat with each species feeding on a variety of food in the different situation within the habitat" (Onoja et al 2011). Many studies have demonstrated the importance of habitat heterogeneity in wetland bird richness and abundance (Gonzalez-Gajardo et al 2009).…”

“…The northern Nigeria sites are within the northern Guinea Savannah vegetation zone characterized by a mixture of trees and grass and receives annual rainfall of between 600 and 1,000 mm per mostly concentrated within 5-7 months (Ezealor, 2001;Omotoriogun et al, 2011;Braimoh et al, 2018). The southern sites are within the Guinea Forest vegetation zone characterized by dense evergreen forest of tall trees with thick undergrowth and receives annual rainfall of between 1,500 and 2,000 mm per annum with about 6-8 months of rainfall (Ezealor, 2001;Adeyanju et al, 2014;Awoyemi et al, 2020).…”
