Dental and Biological Aspects for the Design of an Integrated Wireless Warning System for Implant Supported Prostheses: A Possible Approach

Abstract: The paper proposes a system for an early warning on the prosthesis performance, in particular in terms of micro-displacements of the implant-prostheses connection, enabling actions to prevent fatal damages to the structure. The system includes a sensor for micro-displacement to be inserted in the prosthesis volume, with embedded wireless communications capabilities. Key elements of the system are the system enabling the wireless transmission of the recorded data and the molecular and biochemical approaches to … Show more

“…Microdisplacements can lead to failure of the components such as connection screws and prosthetic framework, which thereby leads microbial colonization in the gap between fixture and prosthesis, thus it increases the chances for developing peri-implantitis and bone resorption. Sannino et al 34 developed an IoT based integrated wireless and sensing technology to detect microdisplacements for implant supported prostheses to prevent mechanical implant failures (Table 3). The system includes a sensor for micro-displacement detection to be inserted in the prosthesis volume, with embedded wireless communications capabilities.…”

“…The proposed model accurately identified tooth structure, gaps, premolars, and molars, and was helpful in effectively extracting oral features for detecting dental caries, plaque, and periodontal diseases [ 158 ]. Sannino et al investigated IoT-based integrated wireless sensing technology to detect micro displacement to prevent implant failure [ 159 ]. IoDT is continuously increasing in dentistry to achieve evidence-based outcomes and improve treatment quality.…”

“…Such micro-displacements may also result in the failure of dental implants. To increase the rate survival of dental implants, Sannino et al [ 56 ] proposed a system to warn micro-displacements of the implant-prostheses connection. The system consisted of a micro-displacement sensor and wireless communications that can be put inside the prostheses.…”
