A gradual transition from traditional face-to-face learning to online learning has been observed globally following the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the study was to compare online and traditional learning methods in relation to orthodontic knowledge and skills acquired in undergraduate courses. A quasi-experimental design was used with two consecutive year classes of 198 dental students at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia. The experimental (virtual) group of 92 students received the content of a clinical orthodontic course virtually using the Blackboard Collaborate™ platform. The control (traditional) group consisted of a previous cohort of 106 students who enrolled in the same course but received traditional classroom education. The students were evaluated through a semester, and both groups obtained the same content and exam questions. The students in the virtual group scored higher in the final theory exam than the traditional group (p-value < 0.05). However, no significant difference in the overall orthodontic knowledge and skills was observed between the groups at the end of the course. Both learning methods showed moderate positive correlation between orthodontic knowledge and skills. In conclusion, virtual learning can serve as an effective alternative to traditional face-to-face learning for teaching orthodontic knowledge and skills to the dental students.

Purpose: To determine the challenges, effectiveness, level of reception and acceptance of E-learning by students (learners) and faculty (educators) in a medical college during the lockdown period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: An online questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted among learners and educators at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India, in the month of August 2020. A total of 203 learners and 24 educators participated in the study. The link of the Google form containing the questionnaire was sent to the students and teachers, and the responses obtained were analyzed with SPSS software (version 20). Results: Two hundred three MBBS students and twenty-four faculty members participated in the study. In our study, 34.5% (n=70) learners and 62.5% (n=15) educators preferred supplementation of E-learning with conventional mode of pedagogy in the future. There was a significant correlation between the convenience and the effectiveness of E-learning. Both learners and educators considered E-learning to be moderately effective. The major problems faced by the educators while conducting online sessions were network issues, difficulty in conducting practicals, lack of controlled environment, and lack of attentiveness by the learners. More than half of the students were satisfied with the E-learning provided by the institute. Educators found E-learning to be moderately convenient, whereas they felt conventional classroom teaching is highly convenient. Conclusion: Educators and learners were quick to adapt to the online mode of learning but the shift was mired with initial challenges. There is a requirement of capacity building in terms of skill development and digital infrastructure building to ensure seamless and effective E-learning.

Aim: e-learning has currently been used as a medium of education due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This survey was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of e-learning class among the dental students of Karnataka and adding a note on their concerns regarding their future plans. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire was created with questions aiming at the effectiveness of e-learning and the concerns of the students regarding their future plans using the Google docs. It was circulated among the dental students of Karnataka using various social media platforms. Results: A total of 406 students completed the survey and nearly half of the respondents (51.1%) were glad to attend online mode of digital learning (73.3%). Of all the respondents, accessibility (88%) and problems related to poor internet connection (55.1%) was not reported as an issue. However, the state of mind of the students (79.9%), psychological stress (72.6%), and the lack of confidence in the clinical/ practical work (83.6%) seemed to be a major concern. A significant concern regarding their future plans was observed in terms of getting a job (58.3%), overseas studying (87.5%), and majority of them felt the requirement of additional training (85.5%). Conclusion: Despite good acceptance and adaptation to this new learning environment, the pandemic has shown to influence the future plans of the students.
