Depressive Symptoms in Hypothyroid Disorder with some Observations on Biochemical Correlates

Abstract: Lumbar punctures and ratings of depressive symptoms were done in hypothyroid patients before and during L-thyroxine therapy. Before treatment, the most prominent symptoms were concentration difficulties, lassitude, and reduced sexual interest. All patients suffered from sleep disturbances. Suicidal thoughts did not occur at all. “…Results similar to own studies were obtained by Gunnarsson et al, where a decrease in memory negatively correlated with the concentrations of TT4 in serum, and positively with the levels of TSH in serum [33]. Also, studies by Boxtel et al conducted in a group of 120 individuals aged 49-71 years confirm the above-mentioned results.…”

“…Consequences of the thyroid dysfunction that can occur in some premutation carriers may be difficult to distinguish from, and may complicate, the direct effects of the premutation on neurological functioning, as hypothyroidism itself may also lead to both cognitive impairments and psychological symptoms of anxiety and depression [Baldini et al, 1997;Gunnarsson et al, 2001;Teixeira Pde et al, 2006]. Thus, since there is some overlap of the cognitive and psychological symptoms, it is important to recognize and treat thyroid disease in premutation carriers.…”

“…33,34 Symptoms of anaemia and of hypothyroidism in women, such as fatigue, depressed mood and reduced volition, can mimic depression. 35 Anaemia is associated with perinatal morbid conditions that resemble those linked to depression: reduced maternal cognitive functioning and diminished sensitivity and responsiveness to the baby, as well as low birth weight, stunting and developmental delays in the infant. 36,37 Iodine deficiency and hypothyroidism in pregnant women are associated with higher rates of stillbirth and with neonatal encephalopathy and mild to severe neurodevelopmental consequences for the infant.…”
