Deprived neighborhoods and risk of road trauma (incidence and severity) among under 25year-olds in the Rhône Département (France)

Abstract: The incidence of injuries as a pedestrian, cyclist or motorist is higher among young people living in deprived municipalities. These areas should therefore be the targets of dedicated education programs, as well as further investigations about urban planning.

“…Reducing speeds to 20 mph in London has been shown to reduce the incidence of RTC but there is a limit to how much speed restriction in urban areas can provide a cost-effective reduction in accidents [23]. French road safety experts have suggested targeted education programmes for drivers in socioeconomically deprived urban areas in order to reduce the endemic problem of children injured from RTCs [24].…”

“…Young individuals, including children, living in deprived areas have been found to have higher injury rates [ 12 , 23 , 24 ]. For instance, a French study found higher rates of traffic accident-related injuries among children and young adults living in deprived areas in the Rhône Department [ 12 ]. A similar pattern was observed in a UK study, which found increased injury rates in particular among children from deprived urban areas [ 23 ].…”

“…They particularly emphasized spatial variations of these events in areas with large low-income and minority populations versus other areas. Other studies were conducted in France and focused on all modes (Fleury et al, 2010;Licaj et al, 2011). Fleury et al (2010) studied the traffic crash risk of residents of deprived areas (i.e.…”

“…Explanations for the origin of such an excessive risk were related to behavior (attitudes and risk-taking among certain social groups, notably young residents of these neighborhoods), and to variations in mobility in the different areal types (e.g., travelling significantly less by car in the sensitive urban areas). A similar study conducted by Licaj et al (2011), included only young people (under 25) and also considered the severity of road trauma. It was found that the incidence of injuries as a pedestrian, cyclist or motorist was higher among young people living in deprived municipalities.…”
