A pesca no Estado do Amazonas e exercida por pescadores que utilizam embarcados de diferentes categorias, empregando diversificados aparelhos de pesca para explorar uma grande diversidade íctia comercializadas em mercados de pequenos a grandes centros urbanos. Este trabalho apresenta a composição e origem da frota pesqueira no estado do Amazonas atuando entre os anos de 2002 e 2010, seus principais aparelhos de pesca empregados, espécies exploradas e mercados onde a produção é comercializada. As informações analisadas derivam do banco de dados do Pró-Várzea/IBAMA, Secretaria de Estado da Produção Rural do Amazonas – SEPROR e Ministério da Pesca e Aquicultura – MPA, analisadas mediante o emprego de técnicas da estatística descritiva. No estado do Amazonas atuam comercialmente 33.451 embarcações com capacidade para armazenar e transportar 33.251,4 toneladas de peixes. Apesar das canoas representarem o maior quantitativo de embarcações, são os barcos de pesca artesanais que concentram em torno de 90% da capacidade de armazenagem e transporte de pescado. A frota explora 37 grupos de espécies, com maior participação dos Characiformes, comercializando a produção nos 62 municípios do estado, estados e países fronteiriços, onde predominam sete grandes mercados: Mercado da Tríplice Fronteira, Mercado Centro Solimões, Mercado Alto Rio Negro, Mercado Acreano, Mercado Rondon, Mercado Paraense e o Mercado Metropolitano de Manaus, onde se observa uma segmentação no direcionamento das embarcações para mercados de maior proximidade da sede do município de origem, que detenham maior demanda e ofereçam melhor valor de mercado.PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Barco, Pesca, Peixes, Mercado.

Multispecies Fisheries in the Lower Amazon River and Its Relationship with the Regional and Global Climate Variability

This paper aims to describe the spatial-temporal variability in catch of the main fishery resources of the Amazon River and floodplain lakes of the Lower Amazon, as well as relating the Catch per Unit of Effort with anomalies of some of the Amazon River, atmosphere and Atlantic Ocean system variables, determining the influence of the environment on the Amazonian fishery resources. Finfish landings data from the towns and villages of the Lower Amazon for the fisheries of three sites (Óbidos, Santarém and Monte Alegre), were obtained for the period between January 1993 and December 2004. Analysis of variance, detrended correspondence analysis, redundancy analysis and multiple regression techniques were used for the statistical analysis of the distinct time series. Fisheries production in the Lower Amazon presents differences between the Amazon River and the floodplain lakes. Production in the Amazon River is approximately half of the one of the floodplain lakes. This variability occurs both along the Lower Amazon River region (longitudinal gradient) and laterally (latitudinal gradient) for every fishing ground studied here. The distinct environmental variables alone or in association act differently on the fishery stocks and the success of catches in each fishery group studied here. Important variables are the flooding events; the soil the sea surface temperatures; the humidity; the wind and the occurence of El Niño-Southern Oscillation events. Fishery productivity presents a large difference in quantity and distribution patterns between the river and floodplain lakes. This variability occurs in the region of the Lower Amazon as well as laterally for each fishery group studied, being dependent on the ecological characteristics and life strategies of each fish group considered here.

Response of Prochilodus nigricans to flood pulse variation in the central Amazon

The influence of the flood pulse on fish populations has been posited, but infrequently tested or quantified. Here, we tested the effect of habitat on population size, using Prochilodus nigricans as a case study species. Floodplain habitat was based on the littoral zone area occupied by P. nigricans to feed. The magnitude of this habitat in each hydrological year, the moving littoral (ML), was expressed as the sum of daily littoral areas during the advancing flood pulse, using satellite-based passive microwave data. Annual population size was estimated by age class, using a dynamic age-structured model (MULTIFAN-CL) based on catches, effort and fish length frequencies from the Manaus-based fishery over 12.75 years. The principal null hypothesis was that the ML, using three lag times, had no effect on population size of a single age class of P. nigricans. The population size at 29 months of age was positively related (p = 0.00030) to floodplain habitat (ML) earlier in the same year, when the fish were 21–27 months old. The result implies a density-dependent relationship for the population with respect to its feeding habitat. Potential mechanisms governed by flood pulse variation and habitat quality for this and other species using floodplain habitats are discussed.
