ABSTRACT:The ascendancy of milk production in Brazil is due to mainly to the adoption of confinement systems, however, construction quality of these systems impact on milk production. This study aimed to simulate the Basic Unit Cost (BUC m -2 ), referring to a free-stall design with capacity for 80 animals and different construction techniques, with a database for various budget analysis and investment plans. A budgetary spreadsheet was modeled, allowing simulating the BUC m -2 for different combinations of roof pillars (metallic, wood or reinforced concrete), covering structure (metallic or wood), coverage model (with or without ridge vent), roof tiles (aluminum, cement or ceramic) and masonry (concrete block, ceramic or solid brick). The techniques used were compositions generated by Price Compositions tables for Budgets (TCPO, 2014). The results relating to 2014 and expressed in unencumbered values showed the maximum variation of 29% in the BUC m -2 , establishing a range of R$ 523.96 m -2 to R$ 675.98 m -2 for the free-stall construction.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of facility comfort level on animal-based welfare indicators as well as on productive and reproductive parameters of 187 dairy farms in the northwest of Spain. Fifty-eight facility-based parameters, which included both housing facilities and management parameters, were evaluated in each farm and used to classify the 187 farms in 5 groups (from 1: top farms to 5: worst farms). Animal-based welfare indicators and reproductive and productive parameters were compared among farm groups. Lameness score significantly differed (p < .005) in top farms (67% of cows having normal gait) versus groups 4 (55%) and 5 (53%). The proportion of cows with dirty lower legs and udder was lower (p < .05) in top farms (80% and 31%, respectively) than in groups 4 (92% and 51%) and 5 (95% and 56%). Other animal-based indicators were not different among farm groups. Heat detection rate was higher (p < .001) in top farms (56.5%) versus groups 4 (51%) and 5 (47%), and milk production/cow/day was also significantly higher (p < .001) in top farms (34.4 L) versus groups 3 (31.2 L), 4 (30.5 L) and 5 (27.4 L). Other reproductive or productive parameters were not different among farm groups. Facility-based measures were compared only between the top and worst farms. In top farms, most facility-based parameters met the welfare-related objectives, whereas in the worst farms only a few facility-based parameters met the welfare objectives. HIGHLIGHTS Fifty-eight facility-based parameters, including housing measures and some management practices, were evaluated and scored in 187 dairy farms. Top-performing farms (i.e. with the best scores) had lower incidence of lameness and of cows with dirty legs and udder than poor-performing farms. Top-performing farms had higher rates of heat detection and higher milk production/cow/ day than poor-performing farms.

SUMMARYThe aim of this study was to identify animal welfare problems during the stunning process in a beef slaughtering plant. Animal welfare indicators such as behaviour and handling by the personnel, were evaluated on 1,025 cattle (cows, heifers and steers) during five days of commercial slaughter; cattle were stunned with a non-penetrating captive bolt pistol. A descriptive analysis was used to show the frequencies of the indicators and a Chi-square test to determine the association between some of them. The most frequent behaviours in cattle were struggling (38.3%), vocalization (17.2%) and falling (9.5%). The guillotine door hit 75.1% of cattle on entering the stunning box. On 49.2% of cattle an electric prod was used. Prodding was significantly associated with vocalization (P < 0.001), falling (P = 0.02) and escape attempts (P < 0.001). Most cattle were effectively restrained at the first attempt (92.3%); however in 6.1% of the cases the effective restraint was incorrect, which was significantly associated with vocalization (P < 0.001) and falling (P = 0.01). These results, together with the fact that in only 86.7% of cattle loss of posture was attained after the first shot indicate that there are animal welfare problems during stunning at this plant. It is concluded that some changes in the structure of the stunning box, as well as training of personnel and closer supervision of the process could help in solving the problems found.Palabras clave: proceso de insensibilización, manejo, comportamiento bovino.
