Description of a medium for isolating Anaerobiospirillum spp., a possible cause of zoonotic disease, from diarrheal feces and blood of humans and use of the medium in a survey of human, canine, and feline feces

Abstract: Anaerobiospirillum spp., motile, spiral anaerobic bacteria, have been implicated as a cause of diarrhea and bacteremia in humans. Anaerobiospirillumlike organisms and Anaerobiospirillum succiniciproducens were reported from 17 cases of diarrhea. Sixteen of the patients did not have any underlying disorders and recovered from the infection; the other one, who had a heart defect, did not. The formulation of a selective medium for Anaerobiospirillum spp. has enabled a survey of human, cat, and dog feces as possib… Show more

“…Heiicobacter pylori N C T C 11637T ( T = type strain) was included as a control in all the three sets. The details of the isolates are listed in Table 1 (Malnick et al 1990); W . succinogenes was grown on BHI agar with added supplements (per 30 ml): horse blood 3 ml; and 1.2 ml supplement mixture contain-ing (g 1-' in distilled water): sodium succinate, 2.5; sodium formate, 50; sodium fumarate, 75; sodium pyruvate, 50.…”

“…These genera are usually found in moist environments and can show a high risk for HAI in immunocompromised patients. Besides, other genera associated with human microflora were also found in high abundances, such as Lactobacillus (mouth and vaginal flora) and Anaerobiospirillum (human, cat, and dog feces) [27]. NICU mobiles showed a greater abundance of Fusobacterium, Neisseria, Rothia, Granulicatella, and Streptococcus (Fig.…”
