Description of a new species of Sparassocynus (Marsupialia: Didelphoidea: Sparassocynidae) from the late Miocene of Jujuy (Argentina) and taxonomic review of Sparassocynus heterotopicus from the Pliocene of Bolivia

Abstract: A new species of sparassocynid marsupial, Sparassocynus maimarai n. sp. from the late Miocene of Maimará Formation (Jujuy Province, Argentina) is described from a left mandibular fragment with a complete p2-m4 series. It differs from the remaining species of the genus S. bahiai (Montehermosan-late Miocene/early Pliocene-of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) and S. derivatus (Chapadmalalan and Marplatan-Pliocene of Buenos Aires Province) by its smaller size, the relatively longer m1 with respect to the m4, the p… Show more

“…The Argentine Province of Jujuy has one of the most important continental late Miocene–Pleistocene sequences of South America, in areas currently near 2700 masl (Pingel et al, 2012). More precisely in the Quebrada de Humahuaca (Eastern Cordillera), the localities of Uquía, Esquina Blanca, Chucalezna, San Roque, and Maimará (Salfity et al, 1984; Reguero et al, 2007; Reguero and Candela, 2008, 2011; Pingel et al, 2012; Pujos et al, 2012; Abello et al, 2015; Galli et al, 2016; Bonini et al, 2017) have yielded a large diversity of vertebrates in which xenarthrans are well represented (Reguero and Candela, 2008, 2011; Pujos et al, 2012).…”

“…Note that the most fossiliferous levels at Quebrada de Maimará, where we recently collected the first vertebrates with precise stratigraphic provenance for this formation (Pujos et al, 2012;Candela et al, 2013;Abello et al, 2015), are located between the most basal tuffs of the section that outcrops west of Maimará town.…”
