Description of Herd Level Criteria for Good and Poor Udder Health in Norwegian Dairy Cows

Abstract: Data from the Norwegian dairy herd recording system were used to evaluate herd level criteria for good and poor udder health in dairy cows. All dairy herds with at least 10 cow-years were included (n = 12,780). The association between bulk milk somatic cell count (BMSCC) and clinical mastitis rate (CM) was weak (R2 = 0.002), indicating that studies based on BMSCC provide different information regarding udder health than studies based on CM. The strongest correlations were found between average cow milk somatic… Show more

“…The farmer-reported ICM in this study (11.6 cases per 100 cows per year) was lower than in other recent studies with census data or a cross-sectional design carried out in Denmark [15], Norway [16], England and Wales [17], Canada [5] and The Netherlands [18]. It is important however to distinguish that in the current study farmers were asked to report the number of cows affected rather than the number of quarters affected.…”

“…Literature reports mastitis incidences from 11% to 40% in different dairy populations (Heringstad et al, 2000;Kadarmideen and Pryce, 2001;Valde et al, 2005). Results obtained by lactation number are in accordance too with those populations, with statistically significant higher frequency in multiparous than in first-lactation cows (Hagnestam et al, 2007).…”

“…(2) The percentage of delivered milk (delivery percentage) was calculated as the total amount of milk delivered to the dairy industry divided by the amount of produced milk multiplied by 100 (Valde et al 2005). The data were taken from a database containing all dairy production information from 17 587 commercial dairy herds enrolled in the Norwegian Dairy Herd Recording System (NDHRS).…”
