Description of Human-Derived Centers for Disease Control Coryneform Group 2 Bacteria as Actinomyces bernardiae sp. nov.

Abstract: Biochemical, chemotaxonomic, and molecular methods were used to establish the precise taxonomic position of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) coryneform group 2 bacteria. The results of a comparative 16s rRNA sequence analysis demonstrated that the CDC coryneform group 2 bacteria constitute a distinct species within the genus Actinomyces. Actinomyces pyogenes was found to be the closest genealogical relative of the CDC coryneform group 2 bacteria, although these taxa were readily distinguished from each ot… Show more

“…In this report, Trueperella bernardiae was resistant to clindamycin and erythromycin. This result differs from the findings of other studies, in which all samples from Canada, USA, and Switzerland were susceptible to all antimicrobial drugs except ciprofloxacin 3. The bacterium was susceptible to erythromycin, piperacillin/tazobactam, linezolid, moxifloxacin, and rifampicin and resistant to norfloxacin and fosfomycin in previous studies 5, 12.…”

“…The bacterium was susceptible to erythromycin, piperacillin/tazobactam, linezolid, moxifloxacin, and rifampicin and resistant to norfloxacin and fosfomycin in previous studies 5, 12. There are also reports of different MIC values for penicillin in previous studies (e.g., ≤0.03 μ g/mL 3, 0.016 μ g/mL 5, 0.25 μ g/mL 12, and 0.064 μ g/mL in our study).…”

“…Funke et al studied this assortment of taxonomic misfits in detail in 1995 [29]. Isolates obtained from the Laboratory of Bacteriology at the CDC were examined for their morphologic, biochemical, molecular, and genetic characteristics; 16s rRNA gene sequencing was the final stage of these investigations.…”

“…Some studies have shown that T. bernardiae is susceptible to all antimicrobial drugs tested, except for ciprofloxacin (4,15). However, other studies show resistance to clindamycin and erythromycin (9), norfloxacin and fosfomycin (13), metronidazole (6), pefloxacin (5), and penicillin G (7).…”
