Descriptive Analysis of Antibiotic-Resistant Patterns of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) st398 Isolated from Healthy Swine

Abstract: Background: Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) such as the MRSA ST398 strain has spread all over the World and the most worrying aspect of this fact appears to be its capacity to easily spread to humans. The excessive use of antibiotics has made swine a reservoir of MRSA. The aim of the present study was to determine the antibiotic resistance profile of MRSA samples isolated from healthy swine of the island of Tenerife (Spain). Methods: A total of 256 MRSA isolates from swi… Show more

“…In the cases of erythromycin, levofloxacin and nitrofurantoin, we obtained 0% resistant strains, whereas for trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole, we obtained 100%. These results contrast with the ones reported by Morcillo et al., ; in isolates from pigs in the same geographic area but using the microdilution method (Vitek ® 2 system, bioMérieux ® , Madrid, Spain). On the one hand, the results for penicillin G and nitrofurantoin agree with ours, but for oxacillin, we obtained 66.7% of resistant strains as opposed to their result of 100%.…”

“…Among the phenotypes of resistance to antibiotics in the ‘miscellaneous’ group, Morcillo et al. report lower values in the case of for trimethoprim–sulfamethoxazole, yet they obtain 33.6% of strains resistant to erythromycin and we found no strain resistant to this antibiotic (Morcillo et al., ). Such broad variability may be explained by the presence of a hypervariable region with genes such as ugpQ , dru , mecI (repressor of mecA ).…”

“…Among bovine MRSA isolates tested, most of them were resistant to β-lactam antibiotics [34] as well as tetracycline, erythromycin and gentamicin. CC398 has also been reported to be highly resistant to several other antibiotics, such as ciproloxacin, tobramycin, clindamycin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole [234]. Antimicrobial resistance patterns of MRSA and MSSA isolates in Hong Kong were very similar [81].…”

“…Detach ® effectively controlled diarrhoea following natural challenge without inducing resistance to antimicrobials in E. coli, but did not lead to the growth advantages observed in NS treated pigs. Recently, a high prevalence of MRSA carriage has been found in pigs and people working in a pig farm in Australia, where 84% of total MRSA positive workers (n = 31) were carrying community associated (CA) MRSA (ST93) and 16% LA-MRSA (ST398) (Sahibzada et al 2017).…”
