Descriptive Complexity for counting complexity classes

Abstract: Descriptive Complexity has been very successful in characterizing complexity classes of decision problems in terms of the properties definable in some logics. However, descriptive complexity for counting complexity classes, such as FP and #P, has not been systematically studied, and it is not as developed as its decision counterpart. In this paper, we propose a framework based on Weighted Logics to address this issue. Specifically, by focusing on the natural numbers we obtain a logic called Quantitative Second… Show more

“…Given that #NFA is SpanL-complete under parsimonious reductions [ÁJ93], and parsimonious reductions preserve the existence of an FPRAS, we obtain the following corollary from Theorem 2. Although some classes C containing #P-complete functions and for which every f ∈ C admits an FPRAS have been identified before [SST95,AMR17], to the best of our knowledge this is the first such a class with a simple and robust definition based on Turing Machines.…”

“…We show that the hierarchy introduced by Saluja et al [2] is not suitable for such a goal, see Section 7. This paper is an extended full version of an earlier conference paper 1 . In the meantime, another paper appeared [8] that extended the framework by Saluja et al In that paper, a so called quantitative logic is introduced, where arithmetic operators are introduced into second-order logic. This framework allowed for characterizations of the classes FP, #P and FPSPACE.…”

“…Finally regarding the relationship between TotP and the class of counting problems that admit an FPRAS, there is an intuitive belief (conjecture) expressed in many texts (in words) that FPRAS ⊂ TotP (e.g. in [9] chapter 17, [34] chapter 6.2, [8] pp. 7-8), and there are no known counterexamples to this conjecture.…”
