Design and Accuracy Analysis of Multilevel State Estimation Based on Smart Metering Infrastructure

Abstract: While the first aim of smart meters is to provide energy readings for billing purposes, the availability of these measurements could open new opportunities for the management of future distribution grids. This paper presents a multi-level state estimator that exploits smart meter measurements for monitoring both low and medium voltage grids. The goal of the paper is to present an architecture able to efficiently integrate smart meter measurements and to show the accuracy performance achievable if the use of re… Show more

“…This observation is extended in [22] for radial systems with the neutral grounded only at the transformer substation. Therefore, despite that the results of the FBS are characterized by a considerable uncertainty [12], they are still a good indication for the neutral voltage and can be used as virtual measurements in the proposed WLS SE. The FBS method used in this paper to construct the virtual measurements of the neutral voltage is the one described in [22].…”

“…There are a number of methods proposed in the literature for distribution networks with DER [25,26]. However, such methods need sparse real-time measurements, which requires a communication infrastructure with large bandwidth and high reliability [27]. The problem is that the current distribution networks are in a transition period towards active distribution networks which is not well supported by developed measurement and communication infrastructures.…”
