Design and Analysis of a Square-Shaped Continuum Robot With Better Grasping Ability

Abstract: Continuum robots, often taking inspiration from biomimetics, are an exciting novel research field and have a great capability. New continuum robots can be inspired by biologies such as seahorses, pipefish, and pipehorses, which have both strong skeleton and great dexterity. In this paper, the main idea contained is how to effectively employ the square components, which aim to imitate the armor and to connect the square components with the ball pairs and soft surface. For displaying the dexterity features of th… Show more

“…The gecko has four legs that are symmetrically distributed. In addition to the gecko's sole, each leg of the gecko has three joints, offering 5 degrees of freedom: a cross-joint between the body and the thigh bone, a knee joint between the thigh bone and the calf tibia, and an ankle joint between the calf tibia and the sole of the foot [30].…”

“…Consequently, by selecting specific elongation rate normalized by the length when the TCPA stops contracting at one certain higher temperature and the initial length, L L decreases to L 0 and never shorten anymore the same as the pitch, p L decreases to the limit pitch p 0 . contraction is steady, the stiffness is obtained using the equation (2).…”

“…These design strategies hinder the adaptability of continuum robots to conformally grasp objects with various curvatures. [23][24][25] To fully adapt to objects with varying curvatures that should be conformally grasped, the seahorse (hippocampus) with a square bony skeleton provides a unique inspiration source for continuum robots. The seahorses have a unique musculoskeletal geometry arranged into a few square segments, and muscles attached to the vertebra transmit forces to the bony plates to regulate the motions.…”
