Design and Behaviour of Reticulated Spatial Structural Systems

Abstract: The paper presents a concise overview of the main features of design and behaviour of reticulated spatial structures, and specifically double layer grids (DLGs) and single layer braced domes. Emphasis is laid on behavioural aspects which are peculiar to these structural systems and which require special attention in design. Some of these features: A susceptibility to progressive collapse; An important role played by joint rigidity, even in stiff systems like DLGs; Sensitivity to imperfections such as member la… Show more

“…Further understanding of the dynamic behavior and failure mechanism of space truss structures is very important, given the increased worldwide demand for such structures, since many of them are built in areas of moderate to high seismicity, such as Japan, the United States, and China. With the low weight and great stiffness, space trusses are believed to attract low forces during seismic activities and can be considered to be amongst the least likely structure to suffer damage (Hanaor, 2011;Marsh, 2000). Many researchers have studied the seismic performance of space truss structures under severe earthquakes based on dynamic analysis (Arjang, 2004;Nie et al, 2014a;Yang et al, 2011;Zhi et al, 2012) and shaking table tests (Nie et al, 2014b(Nie et al, , 2018Zhang et al, 2016).…”

“…Lattice shell structures are normally designed primarily for gravity loads, as their lightweight nature is ideal for large spans. Accordingly, their design for global stability under gravity loads has been studied extensively [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9], for a wide array of configurations such as elliptic paraboloids [10,11], spherical domes [12,13], and cylindrical vaults [14][15][16][17][18][19]. In contrast, their design for seismic actions has received relatively less attention, particularly in terms of practical design considerations that can be used in codified guidance.…”
