Design and Characterization of Micro-Compressor Impellers

Abstract: A study has been conducted, using steady three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations (FLUENT) to investigate dominant performance limiting mechanisms for micro-scale, high-speed compressor impellers with diameter in the range of 5mm to 10mm and peripheral speed ∼ 500 ms−1. Heat transfer to impeller flow (hence non-adiabatic in contrast to nearly adiabatic macro-scale centrifugal compressors for aircraft engine application), casing drag, and impeller passage boundary layer loss are identified … Show more

“…[6][7][8][9][10][11] MGT differs itself from conventional gas turbine due to its low operating Reynolds number and hence a relatively higher skin friction and heat transfer rate. 12,13 Existing research mainly focuses on the design of the engine, 14,15 combustor development, [16][17][18] combustion and emission, 9 combustion instability, 19,20 heat transfer, 21 control strategy, 22 etc. Specific study about the MGT compressor is still limited, although preliminary studies do have addressed this issue in some aspects.…”

“…A number of these bladed micro-rotor designs are simply scaled down versions of larger macro scale machines, while some have been designed by specifically taking into consideration the fluid dynamics and heat transfer characteristics of the micro-turbo-machinery at a much reduced scale [2,5,30]. While the use of bladed rotors might be advantageous for large macro scale turbo-machinery, the complexity and the economics of producing the necessary blade profiles at much reduced micro-scales makes all but impractical their use for micro-scale applications [31].…”
