Design and Characterization of Porous Core Polarization Maintaining Photonic Crystal Fiber for THz Guidance

Abstract: An improved design of Teflon photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a porous air-core is presented for low-loss terahertz guidance. Optimization of total power confinement in the air-holes, together both in the cladding and core regions, is carried out for both quasi-TE and quasi-TM polarizations by using a full-vectorial finite element method (FEM). To achieve the polarization maintenance, modal birefringence is enhanced by destroying the circular symmetry with the introduction of unequal size air-holes in the fir… Show more

“…There are basically two main types of PM PCFs, i.e., highly birefringent (HB) PCFs and single-polarization-single-mode (SPSM) PCFs. To date, a variety of HB PCFs with birefringence values ranging from 0.001 to 0.1 have been proposed and studied both theoretically and experimentally [2,3,4,5,6,7]. On the other hand, there have been many fewer studies on SPSM PCFs, especially in the terahertz (THz) frequency regime.…”

“…Now-a-Days for THz applications Photonic Crystal Fibers (PCF) has been widely used [1,2]. Due to the functioning advantages like structural flexibility, tunability of dispersion, low loss of Photonic Crystal Fibers has been positioned in optical regime [3].…”

“…Various THz waveguides have been recently reported, including polymer fibers [11][12][13][14][15][16][17], metal tube waveguides [18], metal wire waveguides [19], and so on. The polymer fibers can achieve low loss and good flexibility.…”
