Design and Control of Brushless DC Motor Drives for Refrigerated Cabinets

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to develop a variable frequency brushless DC motor drive for the compressors of refrigerated cabinets. It is based on the microcontroller unit (MCU) produced by Renesas Co., Ltd. using the space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) for the modulation of the inverter. In addition, at the AC power supply side of the inverter developed, a circuit for suppressing electromagnetic interference (EMI) and a power factor corrector (PFC) are integrated to control the power factor (PF) at th… Show more

“…Upgrading components and control strategies seems to be one of the most efficient ways to improve the performance of current systems. Compressors, heat exchangers, valves [49][50][51], changes from asynchronous towards brushless motors [51,52], implementation of variable speed drivers for pumps and fans [53], energy monitoring, and data management [54]. The use of a floating condensing control can significantly reduce the overall electricity consumption of compressors and fans [55].…”

“…A DC motor is a machine component that converts electrical energy into kinetic energy. The use of DC motors is widespread in many applications, mainly as an actuator, for example, in a mobile robot [1], an underwater vehicle [2], a fuel mixing process [3], a refrigerated cabinet [4], a solar tracker [5] and so on. Many studies were conducted on many aspects, such as control relating to its energy consumption [6] and its angular position control [7].…”

“…Thus, system instability could be induced easily. Therefore, the smart method of extendable fuzzy theory (EFT) was adopted in this paper [5]. Under different working conditions, such a method could automatically select suitable weighting factors and improve the controller performance of the induction motor drive system.…”
