Design and Performance of a Sideband Separating SIS Mixer for 800–950 GHz

Abstract: We present the design and results of characterization of a new sideband separating (2SB) mixer for 800-950 GHz, based on superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) junctions. This is the first waveguide 2SB SIS mixer demonstrated at such a high frequency. The design is following the classical quadrature hybrid architecture, meanwhile additional attention was put on the reduction of reflections in the RF structure in order to minimize the RF imbalance, to achieve a high image rejection ratio (IRR). The RF wa… Show more

“…Within the framework of international cooperation with our participation, a waveguide sidebandseparating SIS mixer for the 800-950 GHz [42] band was successfully demonstrated recently for the first time. Single-band noise temperature ranges from 450 to 900 K, and the band separation efficiency exceeds 15 dB for 95% of the range.…”

“…The peak at 4.2 GHz is an artifact and is related to the resonance in the intermediate-frequency amplifier. Further, this defect was eliminated when the characteristics of the sideband-separating receiver were measured [42].…”

“…The noise temperature of the 211-275 GHz SIS receiver is 40-60 K (in single-sideband mode at IF bandwidth of 4-12 GHz) [4]. It should be noted that the further development of the SIS technology of receiving systems is running in several main directions: the creation of matrix receivers [12], a significant expansion of both the input receiver range [13] and the intermediate frequency band [14], as well as the development of receivers with band separation [15,16].…”

“…However, we strongly encourage experiments to test observing with hybrid couplers. More information about hybrid couplers can be found in a number of publications (Khudchenko et al., 2019; Kooi et al., 2023; López‐Pérez et al., 2021; Malo‐Gomez et al., 2009).…”
