Design and Productivity of Gravel-Packed Completions

Abstract: Field-scale gravel-pack studies have shown that openhole gravel packs have higher productivity than cased-hole gravel packs; however, in the latter, well productivity can be improved by increasing the size and number of perforations. Results also show that cased-hole gravel-pack productivity can be enhanced by prepacking gravel outside the perforations. Introduction Gravel packing to exclude formation sand from produced fluids has been used as a completion te… Show more

“…The perforating objective is to obtain debris-free perforation tunnels that can be filled with sand during the sand control process. 1,2,3 The desired results are to obtain high-density perforation tunnels with large cross sectional areas and minimum flow restriction. Underbalanced perforating with TCP guns has proven to be the most effective method for obtaining the desired cleanliness in perforation tunnels.…”

“…5,6 Perforation tunnels filled with gravel-pack sand reduce pressure drawdowns and enhance productivity. Perforation cross-sectional area can be enlarged by using large-diameter guns and high shot densities.…”

“…While the link between perforations and gravel-pack success has been established for years by many authors (Penberthy and Shaughnessy 1992;Penberthy and Cope 1980;Bruist 1974), this link is often neglected in actual field operations where perforating and gravel packing are often handled as independent operations. In fact, perforations are the only means of communication between the reservoir and the wellbore.…”
