Design and testing of an innovative electro-hydraulic actuator for a semi-active differential

Abstract: The performance of semi-active differential systems is deeply influenced by the way in which they are actuated. Conventional semi-active systems are actuated by pressure-controlled hydraulic actuators that, despite their good dynamical behaviour, are relatively inefficient. In this work, the authors propose an innovative controlled hydraulic pump solution that is able to drastically improve the efficiency and to reduce the overall encumbrances, maintaining very high performance in terms of dynamical behaviour … Show more

“…Ongoing prosecution of this work is the design of a possible embodiment of proposed solution including a verification of possible interferences and a complete dynamic simulation of the system including control and actuation features. Once inertial and geometric properties of adopted components are completely known, also a more detailed modeling of actuation system including as example an electric or electro-hydraulic unit (Pulcinelli et al, 2018). This detailed model will be used also to obtain a preliminary foreseen of required power respect to realistic work cycles as proposed by Valigi et al (2019).…”

“…In particular the use of an helicoidal coupling assures a very high reduction ratio which is quite useful for the proposed application which is fundamentally a position control were applied forces have to be limited (through a dedicated sensing device) but not really controlled since recorded insertion forces of electric components should be variable depending on tolerances of assembled components. Also exerted forces should be quite lower respect to foreseen maximum ones and this is a further reason to discard direct drive solutions [5][6][7] or electro-hydraulic actuators [8] for which authors have gained considerable experience in past research activities; in this case all this solutions should be extremely less efficient, more expensive and difficult to be controlled especially at partial loads.…”
