A large Petrochemical company installed nearly 50,000 HP of electrical submersible pumps (ESP's) at an existing midwest USA oil field. Being equipped with Adjustable Speed Drives (ASD's) these ESP's introduced high levels of current harmonic distortion which resulted in 14%-19% voltage harmonic distortion at the Electrical Utility supply. Initially, the Utility noticed the low power factor (PF) and had the Oil company pay for the installation of power factor correction (PFC) capacitors on their medium voltage (MV) supply. Once installed, the Utility began to have problems with these capacitors and continued to receive complaints from other customers adjacent to the oil field so they enforced harmonic limits, as defined by IEEE Std 519, at all points of common coupling. Measurements were made with a harmonic analyzer at several locations throughout the electrical system to quantify harmonics and determine the effect the ESP's were having on the Utility distribution system. Computer simulations were performed to analyze different methods of harmonic mitigation. Ultimately, passive harmonic filters were installed on all ESP's in phases. In addition, the PFC capacitors were permanently disconnected after determining that a power system resonance condition existed. Once all phases of the project were complete, the voltage distortion level decreased to below 5% and power factor improved to near unity without the PFC capacitors. This article will describe the effect of harmonics on the electrical distribution system caused by ASD's, practical solutions to excessive voltage harmonic distortion, resonance issues with PFC capacitors and the challenges associated with different methods of harmonic mitigation.

The purpose of this paper is to bring engineers up to date and give them new tools for solving harmonic problems. Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) technologies previously used only in high power applications, such as Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) Drives, Active Front Ends, and 18-pulse rectifiers have moved to lower voltage and power levels. They are now widely used in industrial and commercial power systems. The techniques used in conventional harmonic analysis for the 6-pulse SCR drive no longer apply in many cases. New harmonic limitation devices, such as broadband and active filters are replacing the conventional notch filter.

The ac and dc drives commonly used on land and offshore drilling rigs produce extremely high levels of harmonic distortion. With voltage distortion often exceeding 20%, equipment associated with the drilling operation can experience erratic operation and equipment damage. Repeated damage to one or several ac drives is common. One land rig in Northern Alberta was experiencing failures with its centrifuge equipment on a weekly basis. During one visit to the site, a drive in the centrifuge was found to have tripped off causing the centrifuge to plug up. After cleaning out the centrifuge and restoring the drive, it tripped off again shortly after drilling operations resumed. A power quality analyzer was connected, which revealed extremely high levels of voltage distortion during drilling operations. Deep notches, which are visible in the voltage waveform, were found to be the result of silicon-controlled rectifiers in the mud pump dc drives. Total harmonic voltage distortion (v THD ) reached 25%. A series-connected passive filter was installed ahead of the centrifuge equipment to reduce the voltage notching and lower voltage distortion. The filter reduced the notch depth by more than half and lowered overall voltage distortion at the centrifuge panel to < 9% during the most severe drilling operations. With line-side voltage distortion levels remaining in the 20% range, the filter proved to be extremely effective in eliminating all centrifuge operational and premature failure issues.
