“…Figure 15 shows a typical plasma shape in KSTAR, together with the RMP coil geometry. 39 Because there are three rows of coils located at the low field side of the torus, KSTAR, as well as ITER, has more flexibility in choosing the poloidal spectrum of the applied field, by tuning the relative coil phasing between three rows.…”

“…Each half case was fabricated in three parts such as a circular, circular-to-straight transition and straight part. While the cases in the circular and straight part have 3 mm thickness, the transition part has 15 mm thickness of the case to withstand a strong twisting forces caused by a j × B forces from interactions between flowing currents in the segment and combined magnetic fields of toroidal/poloidal direction [6]. The case material had been changed from 2 mm of Inconel 625 to 3 mm of stainless steel 316LN after careful consideration on fabrication process.…”

“…The mechanical tests showed that tensile (wrap direction), compressive (through thickness), and shear (inter-laminar) strength was 786, 303, and 30 MPa, respectively. As a result, the insulation system was proved to be sufficient for mechanical strengths of which values are higher than the expected maximum stresses of the insulation system [6]. In addition to the mechanical test, the DC high potential tests using a prototype segment were carried out to evaluate the dielectric strength under humid condition over 80%.…”

“…More recently, the IVCC is expected to be effectively utilized in suppression of edge localized mode (ELM). This important system adopted a unique concept of segmented coil system to have 16 segments and their support structures [4]. Each segment contains eight water-cooled normal coppers that are partially connected to an adjacent segment in series to form 4 circular coils for position control as shown in Fig.…”
