Design issues for a Dexter-based hypermedia system

Abstract: This paper discusses experiences and lessons learned from the design of an open hypermedia system, one that integrates applications and data not "owned" by the hypermedia. The Dexter Hypertext Reference Model [8] was used as the basis for the design. Though our experiences were generally positive, we found the model constraining in certain ways and underdeveloped in others. For instance, Dexter argues against dangling links, but we found several situations where permitting and supporting dangling links was adv… Show more

“…Navigational Hypertext is the most traditional domain of hypertext, exemplified in Open Hypermedia Systems such as Chimera [1], DHM [14], HyperForm [30], Microcosm [11] and the HB/SP series [27]. Authors create Links between parts of documents that are related.…”

“…Hypermedia provides users with a well-understood methodology for interacting with information via browsing and navigation. Additionally, Open Hypermedia [1,14,30,11,27] is a paradigm that allows information to be customised and adapted to the user. In this paper, we argue that Open Hypermedia is the right approach to solve the problem of interacting with an ontological information space.…”

“…The design activities spread over a 2-year period, and approximately 10 developers and 20 users were involved. The activties delivered so-called pre-competitive prototypes of a Coordination Tool [17] and a Cooperative Hypermedia Tool [14,15]. These tools are to be turned into general products by some of the industrial partners in the EuroCoOp project.…”
