Hypertext as Method

Abstract: Historically, there has been a tendency to consider hypertext as a type of system, perhaps characterized by provision of links or other structure to users. In this paper, we consider hypertext as a method of inquiry, a way of viewing arbitrary systems. In this view, what are traditionally called "navigational hypertext systems" might be considered as information retrieval systems, "spatial hypertext systems" as brainstorming systems, etc., while their "hypertext" nature results from the way in which such syste… Show more

“…Furthermore, we have demonstrated in various current or past projects that the system can be used for different domains, including software engineering [26] or industry applications [5]. Each of them uses specific features, such as specialized knowledge bases or different sets of structure services (e.g., for supporting spatial, navigational, hierarchical, or metadata structures).…”

“…We see an urgent need to improve our daily work by offering system-wide hypermedia concepts as also proposed in structural computing [24] and by using hypermedia as a general method [1]. We are further encouraged to continue the challenging undertaking of integrating an RSL-enabled hypermedia engine by the many opportunities we see for enhanced interactions in cross-media information spaces, as well as by the fact that also some major operating system vendors were already playing with the idea.…”

“…Rather than try to rationalise IDN as Hypertext, or vice-versa, in this paper we instead consider "Hypertext as Method", an approach that uses Hypertext as a method of inquiry to understand different types of systems [5]. In this way Hypertext acts as a lens through which we can understand the common hypertextuality of different IDN systems, creating an analytical tool which can show how IDN forms are related to one another.…”
