Design of a Bicycle Head Lamp Using an Atypical White Light-Emitting Diode with Separate Dies

Abstract: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a design for a bicycle head lamp with a high-contrast cutoff line using an atypical white light-emitting diode (LED) with two separate dies. The precise optical model was created by setting the weighting factor on the emitting surface. The downward reflector was designed and fabricated to produce a high-contrast cutoff line in both short- and long-axis orientations, but a yellowish outer pattern was observed. A modified two-color optical model wa… Show more

“…The smaller the etendue is, the sharper the cutoff line is. 27 Owing to the inherent scattering characteristic of the phosphor, the emitting surface of a pcW-LED looks like a Lambertian surface. 28 Therefore, etendue (U) is written as [29][30][31][32][33][34] E Q -T A R G E T ; t e m p : i n t r a l i n k -; e 0 0 1 ; 1 1 6 ; 1 4 4…”

“…For the application to a bicycle headlamp, a 1-W pcW-LED is shown to meet the minimum requirement of the K-mark regulation. 27 To form a high-contrast cutoff line, there are various approaches related to using a reflector, including an L-shape light pipe and a truncated reflector with a cylindrical lens. 23 In addition, using a cylindrical lens array on the exit face of a headlamp is helpful for increasing the contrast of the cutoff line and decreasing the manufacturing error.…”

“…In the method of comparing the 1-D light intensity, we use a power meter connected with a detector to measure light intensity by controlling the LED rotates around itself 181 degrees or the detector rotates around LED. Various studies achieved the precise optical model by applying this methodology [10][11][12] . However, the space between LED and detector must be large enough to conduct the rotation.…”

“…Vehicle head lamps are crucial for traffic lighting to allow high visibility of the driver, pedestrians, and other people on the road. In the eleventh paper, Lin et al [11] present a design of a bicycle head lamp using a low-cost and atypical white light-emitting diode with separate dies. This is the first demonstration of a design for a bicycle head lamp using an atypical white LED with two separate dies.…”
