Design of a Connected Security Lighting System for Pedestrian Safety in Smart Cities

Abstract: Historical and ongoing pedestrian anxiety about night crimes in alleyways is an important issue in our society. Therefore, recommended illuminance levels in pedestrian alleys have been established and security lighting meeting such illuminance levels has been installed to ensure proper brightness. However, pedestrians may still feel that such areas are too dark and want to ensure their safety through sufficient brightness, especially late at night. In this study, a smart security lighting system, which was nam… Show more

“…The most common crimes to be prevented are social or property crimes, such as vandalism or theft. These are crimes usually committed on the street or in public areas (Cho, Jeong, Choi & Sung, 2019;Schuilenburg & Peeters, 2018), so these are areas where the administration in charge of managing public security has more scope to work directly than if these crimes were committed in the private areas (King, Aggarwal, Taddeo & Floridi, 2019). In addition,…”

“…Es necesario contar con espacios urbanos que no sean excluyentes, que den seguridad y confort con la ayuda de una arquitectura funcional. No solo se trata de ofrecer una mayor iluminación, sino de implementar un diseño óptimo que brinde una luz más brillante en los espacios, con sensores de movimiento (Cho et al, 2019).…”

“…Cho et al developed a prototype methodology of a connected security lighting system that identifies a pedestrian's smartphone via a Bluetooth beacon and increases luminance at the immediate area. In the event that a pedestrian does not have a Bluetooth device to be detected, an infrared sensor detects movement and increases luminance respectively [100]. Moreover, leveraging the successes of CV, this paper proposes a framework that can integrate the lighting parameters factoring the CPTED elements as highlighted in Table 2.…”
