The properties and advantages of axial flow cyclones are presented; several dozen of them are already widely used as the first stage of inlet air filtration in internal combustion motor vehicle engines, work machines and helicopters. The necessity to conduct research on cyclones to improve separation efficiency has been demonstrated. Using the commercial engineering software Ansys Fluent, at a constant inlet velocity of 10 m/s, an assessment was made on the effect of the separation length and inlet diameter of the outlet tube on changes in separation efficiency in axial flow cyclone. Each of the examined parameters was variable while maintaining other factors at a constant level. In the numerical calculations, test dust was used, which was the equivalent of AC fine dust, the particle size composition of which was taken into account using the Rosin–Rammler model. Increase in the separation efficiency was observed with an increase in the separation length and a decrease in the diameter of the cyclone inlet tube. For the cyclone model with an increased separation length and reduced diameter of the inlet pipe, numerical tests of separation efficiency and pressure drop were performed for various velocities at cyclone inlet in the range of 2.5–15 m/s. The obtained characteristics of modified axial flow cyclone were experimentally verified on a laboratory stand during cyclone prototype tests, the model of which was printed using the additive manufacturing technique.

In this work, gas phase distribution characteristic and separation performance of a new vane-type gas-liquid separator were carefully investigated using Electrical Resistance Tomography and numerical simulation. The diameter of separator was 100 mm and the flow rate ranges from 12.0 to 23.0 m 3 /h. And the gas flow rate ranges from 1.2 to 4.0 m 3 /h. In the experiment, Electrical Resistance Tomography was applied to test section void fraction distribution. Coriolis mass flow meter was applied to obtain separation efficiency by testing separator exits mixture density. In the numerical simulation, full Eulerian multiphase model, together with RNG k-ε turbulent model and dispersed phase zero equation models were applied. Results show that the vane-type gas-liquid separator's performance is influenced by gas core size. And the separator performs well in all the cases considering separation efficiency is over 85% and achieves nearly 100% through adjustment of split ratio. All these findings are beneficial for vane-type gas-liquid separator design and optimization.

Axial cyclone separators are used as primary filtration components in many internal combustion engine applications. A numerical study of gas-solid flow through an axial cyclone separator is carried out by Eulerian-Lagrangian CFD approach, which uses discrete phase modelling (DPM) of particles and solution of incompressible turbulent Navier-Stokes equations with RNG k—ɛ closure model. The effective filtration of inlet air from dust particles is an important requirement for prolonged engine life cycle. In axial cyclone separators, a helical swirl generator is used for imparting swirling motion to theparticle laden flow and particles are filtered by centrifugal separation and then scavenged using a vortex tube. In the present work, the modelling done in OpenFOAM successfully captures the features of the swirling flow, along with particle–gas and particle–wall interactions for a varying size distribution at the inlet. Studies were aimed at analysing the effect of particles and its effect on improving the performance of the filter.
