Design of Middleware for Interactive Data Services in the Terrestrial DMB

Abstract: In this letter, we introduce a new middleware architecture and its generic application programming interface (API) (called the T‐DMB MATE API) for terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T‐DMB). Middleware in T‐DMB enables inter‐operable applications to be downloaded from both broadcast and telecommunication networks in advance and to be executed in any type of T‐DMB receiver. The middleware we introduce here is especially designed to support a proposed method for application provisions applied to a conce… Show more

“…In reality, however, broadcast providers have not been able to create additional rich services except for channel leasing and advertisements. Up to the present, to create new rich services, DMB broadcast providers in South Korea have developed additional services by using DMB broadcasting networks, such as TPEG services, middleware services, and DMB 2.0 services [2] [3]. However, causes such as the emergence of competing media, users' heightened demands, and problems with application compatibility due to disparate operating system (OS) porting among terminals have led to negligible results in terms of market activation.…”

“…Several mobile broadcasting services have been launched zealously, such as Media FLO, DVB-H, T-DMB, and One-seg [1]. T-DMB and One-seg are only operated actively for mobile broadcasting services [2]. Because the T-DMB system is based on the Eureka-147 DAB system, it has the characteristics of the DAB system, such as good mobile reception, power efficient transmission, and low power dissipating receiver [3,4].…”
