Design of the third-generation neutron spallation target for the CERN’s n_TOF facility

Abstract: The neutron Time-Of-Flight (n_TOF) facility at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) is a pulsed white-spectrum neutron spallation source producing neutrons for two experimental areas: EAR1, located 185 m downstream of the spallation target, and EAR2, located 20 m above the target. The facility is based on a lead target impacted by a high-intensity 20 GeV/c proton beam. It is designed to study neutron-nucleus interactions for neutron kinetic energies from a few meV to several GeV, with applicatio… Show more

“…Neutrons at n_TOF are produced by the interaction of a 20 GeV pulsed proton beam at high intensity, extracted from the Proton Synchrotron (PS), with a pure lead target cooled down with gaseous nitrogen. Each pulse delivers an average of 7 × 10 12 protons [13] in only 6 ns, and the time structure consists of a cycle composed of 6 pulses separated by 1.2 s plus 30 s of cool-down time [17], [18]. During 2022, the average protons on target (POT) delivered to n_TOF were 3.9 × 10 15 POT/h, while the same value delivered to CHARM, which is also fed by the PS, was 1.1×10 14 POT/h.…”

“…During the last CERN long shutdown LS2 (2019-2021) the facility underwent its latest major upgrade, which mainly comprised the replacement of the spallation target itself [11,12] and the construction of the new NEAR station for neutron-activation measurements [13,14].…”
