The combined route of stoichiometric combustion + three-way catalysis (TWC) is an era choice for natural gas vehicles (NGVs) to actively respond to the environmental protection requirements of gradual pressurization. However, synergistic and efficient purification of exhaust gas in a humid atmosphere is still one of the key challenges. The catalytic performance of phosphorus-doped and phosphorus-free CeO2–ZrO2–Al2O3 (CZA)-supported Pd-based model catalysts for CH4, NO, and CO was evaluated in a practical operating environment close to stoichiometric combustion. Phosphorus doping induces the formation of abundant surface lattice oxygen, promotes the active migration of interface charges, and improves the catalytic activity of the Pd/CeO2–ZrO2–P2O5–Al2O3 (Pd/CZPA) catalyst for CH4 and NO conversion. However, the catalytic oxidation of CO strongly depends on the dispersion of Pd nanoparticles, regardless of whether phosphorus is added or not. This research provides a useful guidance for the development of new pure palladium TWC for NGVs, regional environmental governance, as well as re-examining the value of phosphorus.

“…From Table 1, it is seen that the surface concentration of Pt follows a sequence of Pt/Ce/Al100 < Pt/Ce/Al300 < Pt/Ce/Al500, which confirms the hypothesis that for Pt/Ce/Al500, the largest amount of Pt is distributed on the outer surface of the catalyst, and thus more active sites could be provided to facilitate the catalytic reaction process. [ 31 ] For Pt/Ce/Al100 and Pt/Ce/Al300, Pt species are principally or partially embedded into the CeO 2 region, leading to their lower Pt dispersion. For a CeO2/Al2O3‐supported Pt catalyst system, the distribution of Pt is of significant importance to its hydrothermal stability and catalytic performance. Generally speaking, impregnation of a Pt precursor on CeO2/Al2O3 composite is a commonly applied approach to synthesize the catalyst. In this work, partially calcined CeO2 on Al2O3 was used as the support to modify Pt distribution. The characterization results reveal that for conventional Pt/CeO2/Al2O3, Pt is distributed on the outer surface of CeO2/Al2O3; although high dispersion of Pt is obtained for the fresh sample, severe aggregation of Pt species inevitably takes place upon hydrothermal aging treatment, leading to drastic catalyst deactivation. On the other hand, when Pt is principally embedded into the CeO2 region, the Pt/CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst has better hydrothermal stability; however, it still shows undesirable catalytic performance owing to the comparatively low dispersion of Pt on the surface. Fortunately, when Pt species are partially embedded into the CeO2 region, and the other portion is located on the outer surface of CeO2, a favourable balance between the dispersion and hydrothermal stability is realized, which consequently brings about superior three‐way catalytic performance after hydrothermal aging treatment.

The increase in intensity of the band at about 595 cm −1 , which encloses contributions due to oxygen vacancies and defects due to changes in cations coordination, shown by the addition of PdCu to the CeO 2 lattice can be attributed to the strong interaction between the supported species and the support [44,47].…”
