Designing green self-healing anticorrosion conductive smart coating for metal protection

Abstract: The development of an electrically-conductive anticorrosion coating with self-healing capability for metallic surface protection constitutes a priority concern for many key industrial applications. While current technologies largely rely on hazardous chromate-based corrosion inhibitors, this work proposes a simple polymer-based layer-by-layer (LBL) architecture, implemented using easy and fast fabrication techniques. Moreover, this smart coating architecture relies on three environmentally friendly polymers na… Show more

“…Moreover, after rinsing the sample with deionized water to wash away the ZnO precipitate, we observe that the coating is in excellent condition and there are no signs of corrosion around the scratched area or underneath of the coating (Figures 12C, D). As expected, 8HQ act as corrosion inhibitor and provides selfhealing capabilities under NSSt conditions (Xhanari and Finšgar, 2019;Banerjee et al, 2020).…”

“…In this work we use 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) as a self-healing agent that was previously reported for our team (Banerjee et al, 2020). The 8HQ was procured from Sigma Aldrich (CAS 148-24-3).…”

“…Self-healing polymer materials (SHPMs), as a class of intelligent bionic materials, can autonomously heal the mechanical microcracks generated in their matrices [8][9][10]. SHPMs have attracted much attention in recent years [11][12][13], exhibiting tremendous application prospects in artificial skin [14,15], coatings [6,16], binders [17,18], and other fields [19,20]. To date, SHPMs can be divided into two categories, extrinsic and intrinsic types, according to their selfhealing mechanisms [9].…”

“…Coating protection is an effective way to settle Al alloy corrosion. [5,6] However, restricted by environmental protection law, traditional phosphate treatment, heavy metal electroplating, mechanical alloying, ball milling, and other coating technologies are facing severe challenges. [7,8] Therefore, the development of environmentalfriendly, simple, and low-cost methods to settle Al alloy corrosion has received extensive attention.…”
