Designing Immersive Virtual Environments for Human Behavior Research

Abstract: What are strategies for the design of immersive virtual environments (IVEs) to understand environments’ influence on behaviors? To answer this question, we conducted a systematic review to assess peer-reviewed publications and conference proceedings on experimental and proof-of-concept studies that described the design, manipulation, and setup of the IVEs to examine behaviors influenced by the environment. Eighteen articles met the inclusion criteria. Our review identified key categories and proposed strategie… Show more

“…Interactive VR mock-ups allow the participant to move around within the VR environment while also being able to manipulate and interact with the virtual world. These are also referred to as fully immersive virtual environments [ 10 , 11 ]. The latter is achieved through the use of a head-mounted display, where participants wear a visual display on their head and over their eyes [ 11 , 12 ].…”

The latter is achieved through the use of a head-mounted display, where participants wear a visual display on their head and over their eyes [ 11 , 12 ]. A head-tracking device allows continuous updates to be provided on the visual display based on the location and orientation of the user’s head and hands as they interact with the virtual environment.…”

“…The chromesthesia who can also associate certain feelings when watching the video will experience a slight difference in emotional perception [26]. Therefore, this difference should consider object placement and display media with commensurate and unobtrusive audio [8,27].…”

“…These implementations of the pro/con arguments also mentioned in the text format might not have been visually salient enough, or understood. Neo et al (2021) suggest incorporating highly photorealistic textures, e.g., high-resolution images from real products, as one essential VR design strategy. They argue that this is important if participants are expected to pick up objects or to examine them more closely.…”
