Designing with Pores - Synthesis and Applications

Abstract: Environment, energy, health and transpor t issues are dominating our modern daily live. The complex interactions of these problems can only be solved by sustainable processing and the development of improved components. Materials science will play an important role in this new approach. One domain with specific relevance are porous ceramics and metals. It are substrates with pores sizes ranging from vacancies at the atomic level to macro pores with sizes of millimeters. There are plenty of emerging application… Show more

“…Various processing routes (etching, sacrificial templating, direct foaming, replica, additive manufacturing, etc.) have been explored for the production of porous ceramics, and several reviews are available on the subject13456. In a recent review, application based properties of those materials with respect to microstructural features have also been published7.…”

“…Porous ceramics, which have outstanding properties, such as excellent corrosion resistance, good structural stability and high hardness, are extensively used in various fields, such as filtration, catalysis and environmental protection [1,2,3,4]. Traditionally, ceramics have intrinsic disadvantages, for instance high brittleness, poor machinability and low conductivity, which limit their potential applications [5,6].…”
