Designs of low insertion loss optical router and reliable routing for 3D optical network-on-chip

Abstract: Three-Dimensional Optical Network-on-Chip (3D ONoC) has recently emerged as a high-performance on-chip communication solution; however, owing to the intrinsic characteristics of photonic devices in existing 3D ONoC, the insertion loss caused by undesirable coupling among optical signals degrades network performance. Considering manufacturing defects and unpredictable noise sources that cause the failure of Optical Routers (ORs) in 3D ONoC, previous work simply abandoned the disabled OR when computing the resto… Show more

“…Silicon photonic devices offer an exact route to solve the electrical processing bottleneck due to its low loss, high speed, low energy consumption, and compatibility with CMOS platforms. Among the various silicon photonic devices, MRs are considered the most critical devices in photonic computing due to their excellent wavelength selection characteristics, small size, high modulation rate, low energy consumption, and high-quality factors [40,41]. Figure 2 shows two commonly used MR structures: all-pass MR (Figure 2(a)) and 1 × 2 cross-MR (Figure 2(e)).…”

“…Transport network (PTN), automatically switched optical network (ASON) to elastic optical network (EON). At the same time, optical network hardware, such as transponder and switch, should support software programmability [1], and the control circuit was integrated on a chip [2]. From the perspective of evolution, optical networks will continue to develop in the direction of large-capacity, dynamic, flexible, multi-dimensional, and intelligent integration.…”

“…Cloud computing makes data backup, disaster recovery and business continuity easier and less expensive, because data can be mirrored at multiple redundant sites on the cloud provider's network. Network virtualization is the key to the current and future success of cloud computing 2) . It turns out that computer networking itself has to be virtualized.…”

“…In this pair, the electron of one of two Bi + ions transits to the ground state, and the electron of the other Bi + ion is excited to the fourth level (Figure 2(b)) and then nonradiately relaxes to the third level, and is then excited again to higher level by absorbing one 980 nm pump photon (Figure 2(c)). Following this diagram, the rate equations can be written as 3…”
