Desmids (Zygnematophyceae) from the littoral zone of an urban artificial lake: taxonomic aspects and geographical distribution

Abstract: Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the taxonomic aspects and geographical distribution of the periphytic desmids from two different substrates in the littoral zone of an urban artificial lake. Methods Samples of epiphytic and epilithic desmids were collected by grass and rock scraping, respectively, in two stations in the Cascavel municipal lake, Paraná, during April 2015, and March 2016 and 2017. In the laboratory, the taxa obtained from the samples were photographed and their morphometric characteris… Show more

“…For the other water bodies, the proportion of species abundance of Cosmarium genus and Staurastrum genus is significantly lower. Desmids are used as indicators of water quality as they are sensitive to any changes in water bodies (Coesel 2001;Aquino et al 2018). They are typical representatives of the flora of oligotrophic and mesotrophic aquatic systems (Aquino et al 2018).…”

They are typical representatives of the flora of oligotrophic and mesotrophic aquatic systems (Aquino et al 2018). There are even fewer green microalgae (14% of the total species number) and blue-green algae (8% of the total species number) in Lake Turgoyak.…”

“…On the basis of cell structure algae are mainly two types: prokaryotic (Blue green algae) and eukaryotic (all other algal forms including desmids). Desmids are microscopic, unicellular, eukaryotic organism belong to class Zygnematophyceae (Phylum Charophyta) of algae (8)(9)(10). The cells of majority of the desmids taxa are transversally curved by constriction (sinus) into two symmetrical semi-cells connected by an isthmus (8,9).…”
