Kayla Rush was an information officer in EMN Ireland at the ESRI.Predicting trends in applications into the future is difficult, and trends are largely dependent on the actions and responses of various actors, including governments in countries of origin and first asylum, international actors, other countries in the region and the Irish government. Some drivers are likely to be temporary (e.g., the COVID effect, the initial displacement from Ukraine and the impact of labourmarket shortages if proposed employment-permit reforms are adopted). Others may be longer-term (e.g., network effects, changing smuggler routes and potential deflection effects from the UK). The acknowledgement that factors driving international protection applications are largely outside the control of national governments means that flexible reception systems are key.Further research needs to be conducted to better understand the reasons behind the recent increase in applications in Ireland, including interviews with asylum applicants. There is a lack of research specific to the Irish context on this subject, meaning that the literature review had to draw conclusions from other contexts. Further research should examine the experiences of asylum applicants travelling to Ireland and applying for asylum here, and should conduct a more in-depth examination of Ireland in the context of broader EU trends.1 Figures for July, August and September 2022 are also included in this report, although the analysis remains focused on the first six months of 2022.

In late February 2022, the Russian invasion of Ukraine set‐off a tide of refugees heading west. The paper discusses the scale of the refugee flow into Poland, its distribution patterns and its influence on existing demographic structures (both captured at a local LAU 1 scale). By studying refugee flows at three time‐points, the study, on the one hand, offers a dynamic analysis and, on the other, identifies the spatial patterns behind the movements of the successive waves of refugees. Unexpected wave of recent immigration is likely to strengthen the demographic and settlement processes observable in Poland. The above pertains to both the overall concentration in major metropolitan areas, as well as to suburbanisation processes. The areas with the highest depopulation (eastern Poland) have recorded a relatively low influx of refugees. This implies that it cannot be expected that the immigration may be of a compensatory nature and that it will be helpful in making up for structural population losses in such areas.

The degree to which asylum or refugee integration policy influences a forcibly displaced individual's decision to settle in one European country versus another remains understudied, yet highly visible in policy and public debate. This work asks what explains this decision‐making via Spanish case study. The authors analyse 30 in‐depth interviews with persons seeking international protection from Spain combined with surveys among Spanish NGOs conducted in 2021. Main results firstly demonstrate that few individuals were previously aware of their intended destination's integration policies. Second, decision‐making affected by policies differs between individuals, related to socio‐demographic characteristics (origin country, age, gender). Third, EU policies serve as an auxiliary consideration. Finally, individual personal networks serve as the recurrent, principal pull factor. This paper contributes by highlighting that Spanish integration policies do not serve as a primary influence on decision‐making; instead, they serve as secondary or mediating factors, alongside the main factor of personal networks.
