DETECHIP®: A Sensor for Drugs of Abuse*

Abstract: The design and preliminary characterization of a novel sensor for drugs of abuse, DETECHIP, is described in this proof-of-concept note. Combining both colorimetric and fluorimetric assays, DETECHIP is suitable for lab and field use. More than a conventional spot test which provides a single "yes or no" answer, DETECHIP provides twenty responses for a more complete characterization of suspect material. This is accomplished by visually noting colorimetric and fluorescent changes of carefully selected dyes upon t… Show more

“…Recent advances of reactive arrays have demonstrated convincingly that many classes of molecules can be identified in this format [1]-[6]. Our group has developed a colorimetric and fluorometric assay in a 96-well plate, DETECHIP®, which has successfully discriminated between many small molecules, with our main focus being illicit, over the counter drugs, and cutting agents.…”

“…Designed for lab and field use, DETECHIP ® is a mix-and-measure assay that is capable of providing both colorimetric and fluorescent signals for the rapid detection and identification of molecules of emerging interest such as narcotics, narcotics with cutting agents, over the counter medications, volatile organic compounds, explosives and the intermediates used to make them, microbial metabolites, and environmental contaminants like pesticides [1, 2]. The term DETECHIP ® (short for detection chip) combines the concept of small molecule detection with the use of an array of chemical indicators.…”

“…Affording individual codes for the multitude of compounds listed in Table 1, DETECHIP ® has the unique ability to detect and discriminate substances in many difference classes: over-the-counter (OTC) medications, explosives, pesticides, food spoilage metabolites, drugs laced with cutting agents, and various other organic molecules [14, 12]. …”
