Detecting local immunoglobulin E from mucosal brush biopsy of the inferior turbinates using microarray analysis

Abstract: This is the first demonstration that antigen-specific IgE in saline samples can be measured using MA. The ability of MA to measure smaller amounts of IgE, with similar accuracy, may give it a potential advantage for MBB analysis in the future.

“…Seven common airborne allergens and 1 food allergen were chosen for this study: White oak, Timothy grass, ragweed, cat, Alternaria , Dermatophagoides farinae , cockroach, and peanut. A food allergen was included because species‐specific IgE to food allergens have previously been identified in the nasal cavity using MBB . The actual sensitization of the participants to these allergens, based on either serum IgE testing, skin testing, or local IgE testing, was unknown prior to enrollment.…”

“…MBB testing in other regions of the oral cavity and GI tract should also be explored. Using microarray analysis of MBB samples from the inferior turbinate, species‐specific IgE to shrimp was detected . Future studies will also determine whether or not airborne allergens can be detected from oral cavity MBB testing.…”

“…We are prompted to speculate that the IgE repertoire of NS of young infants with cow milk, egg, or other food allergies is mostly dominated by those animal food allergens. The presence of IgE to animal foods has been already described in the nasal mucosa, 28 but this aspect remains quite open for further investigations. partly be due to the relatively small study population size, 11 to the diversity in collection and procession methods, 1 or the sensitivity of the IgE assays.…”
