Detection and molecular characterisation of bovine Enterovirus in Brazil: four decades since the first report

Abstract: It is suggested that bovine enteroviruses (BEV) are involved in the aetiology of enteric infections, respiratory disease, reproductive disorders and infertility. In this study, bovine faecal samples collected in different Brazilian states were subjected to RNA extraction, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis and partial sequencing of the 5′-terminal portion of BEV. One hundred and three samples were tested with an overall positivity of 14.5%. Phylogenetic analysis clustered these BEV Brazil… Show more

“…BEV is one of the most important pathogens causing digestive, respiratory, and reproductive tract diseases in cattle, which can be readily coinfected with BEV and other viruses, causing significant economic losses in the cattle industry ( 16 , 17 ). The prevalence of BEV has been reported worldwide, with positivity rates of 67% in Thailand, 14.5% in Brazil, 78% in Spain, 22.83% in Turkey, and 21.49% in Henan Province, China ( 10 , 14 , 18 20 ). However, so far, there have been no reports on the prevalence of BEVs in Guangxi Province, China, which is one of the main cattle and buffalo farming regions.…”

“…Persistent diarrhea, respiratory disease, and enteritis are common pathological signs in cattle infected with BEV. Moreover, they do not have characteristic pathological lesions distinguishing BEV infection from other pathogens that cause similar clinical signs (Candido et al, 2019). It is highly resistant to environmental conditions (Birdane and Gür, 2019).…”

“…Bovine enterovirus (BEV) is an Enterovirus in the Picornaviridae family. Picornaviruses are small, nonmembrane, positive-stranded RNA viruses (Candido et al, 2019). The Picornaviridae family consists of 63 genera and 147 species.…”

“…BEVs are endemic in cattle worldwide but, despite its large commercial cattle herd, data about BEV infection in Brazil are scarce. After a serological screening performed in the 1970s ( 3 ), the presence of these viruses determined through reverse transcriptase (RT)-PCR was described only in 2016 ( 4 ). Since then, no other data on BEV in Brazil have been published.…”

“…In a previous report of BEV identification in Brazil ( 4 ), the strains were classified as Enterovirus F species. However, the sequences analyzed were 180 nucleotides long and were not considered for inclusion in this phylogenetic analysis.…”
