Detection of biological particles in ambient air using bioaerosol mass spectrometry

Abstract: The Bio-Aerosol Mass Spectrometry (BAMS) system is an instrument used for the real time detection and identification of biological aerosols. Particles are drawn from the atmosphere directly into vacuum and tracked as they scatter light from several continuous wave lasers. After tracking, the fluorescence of individual particles is excited by a pulsed 266nm or 355nm laser. Molecules from those particles with appropriate fluorescence properties are subsequently desorbed and ionized using a pulsed 266nm laser. Re… Show more

“…T he Bioaerosol Mass Spectrometry (BAMS) system was developed for national security and public health applications including the real-time, in situ detection of airborne pathogens [1] and biowarfare agents [2,3]. It has the ability to distinguish Bacillus spores from vegetative cells on a particle by particle basis using ion peaks under m/z 300 [4], and has demonstrated preliminary species level differentiation of individual Bacillus spores using low mass biomarker peaks [5,6].…”

“…Regardless of the algorithm used, the false alarm rate of any detector depends critically upon the environment in which it is placed. Older SPAMS systems were twice sent to characterize ambient aerosols at SFO. , Data from the first and longer of those field tests is used here to demonstrate the potential for a low false alarm rate in real-world environments.…”
