Detection of chlorite, chlorate and perchlorate in ozonated saline

Abstract: Medical ozone is used to treat various diseases, including numerous pathologies associated with chronic pain. Chronic pain may be treated by systemic administration of ozone, with ozonated autohemotherapy (OAH) being the commonly used method. In the clinic, intravenous infusion of ozonized saline has been used to treat various diseases. Compared with OAH, ozonized saline infusion is less technically demanding and causes minimal damage to veins. However, it has been indicated that ozone may oxidize saline and g… Show more

“…The literature provides limited data on alternative methods of administering ozone therapy, and there is a lack of information regarding the safety of these techniques. Some authors attempted to determine the concentration of chlorite, hypochlorite, and perchlorate in the oxygen-ozone-treated saline solution, but the assessments at three, six, and 16 days are too distant from the therapeutic window [15]. As with any form of complementary therapy, safety is paramount for clinical practice.…”

“…As for the systemic ozone administration using ozonated saline, Ringer lactate, dextrose and similar, it is critical to clarify the differences with the use of infusion solutions in which the gaseous ozone was dissolved after insufflation of the oxygen/ozone mixture. Leaving aside the toxicological problems deriving from the potential formation of chemical species because of the oxidation reaction of ozone with the chemical species present [ 91 , 92 ], the question is: how to correctly consider these modalities?…”

“…Além disso, concentrações mais altas de O3 resultam em níveis aumentados de clorato (ClO3 -) 35 . É importante ressaltar que o O3 pode reagir com seu recipiente e, assim, aumentar os níveis de substâncias tóxicas na solução de ozônio 36 .…”
