Detection of human papillomavirus DNA in oral inverted ductal papillomas

Abstract: Aims: To determine the presence or absence of human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in oral inverted ductal papillomas (IDPs) using in situ hybridisation (ISH), and to analyse all cases for histological features of HPV infection. Methods: Six cases were retrieved from archival material and paraffin wax blocks were submitted for the detection of HPV DNA by means of ISH. “…Since human papilloma virus (HPV) has been identified in sinonasal papilloma by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and in situ hybridisation (ISH) techniques, many authors have searched for the presence of HPV in oral IDP because of the histological similarity between oral IDP and inverted papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses. In 2003, HABERLAND-CARRODEGUAS et al 5 documented the first cases of oral IDP demonstrating positivity for HPV DNA 6/11 using ISH in three cases and showing histological features of HPV infection in six cases. The authors report, for the first time, the simultaneous appearance of an IDP and two condyloma acuminata (CA) associated with HPV 11 in the lips of a middle-aged HIV+ woman, and compare the histopathologic findings of the samples using routine light microscope and PCR for HPV DNA.…”
