Detection ofSalmonella entericain Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) of Chilean Patagonia: evidences of inter-species transmission

Abstract: Patagonia in southern South America is among the few world regions where direct human impact is still limited but progressively increasing, mainly represented by tourism, farming, fishing and mining activities. The sanitary condition of Patagonian wildlife is unknown, in spite of being critical for the assessment of anthropogenic effects there. The aim of this study was the characterization of Salmonella enterica strains isolated from wild colonies of Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) located in Ma… Show more

“…Furthermore, it is one of the most prevalent serotypes isolated from cattle with clinical signs of salmonellosis; however, in pigs, it may occur in sick and asymptomatic animals [39]. This serotype was also isolated from seabirds [40], both in seagulls leaving in the proximity of garbage deposits [34] and in Magellan penguins from the Chilean Patagonia [41].…”

“…Numerous studies have isolated S. Typhimurium and other salmonella serotypes (but not S. Pullorum) from penguins elsewhere (Olsen et al 1996;Palmgren et al 2000;Iveson et al 2009). Dougnac et al (2015) isolated S. Enteriditis and S. Agona from fecal and cloacal samples of Magellanic Penguins in southern Chile, and some strains showed genotypic similarity with salmonella strains recovered from humans and gulls, suggesting interspecies transmission. Magellanic Penguin colonies are commonly surrounded by other seabird species such as Kelp Gulls (Larus dominicanus), which are often associated with human dwellings and waste (Yorio et al 1998;Giaccardi and Yorio 2004).…”
