“…Lead exposure has been reported to reduce steroid metabolic activity in SCs and to be cytotoxic for Sertoli-germ cell cocultures (Adhikari et al, 2000;Wiebe et al, 1983). Furthermore, exposure of animals (Alexaki et al, 1990) and humans (Huang et al, 2001) to lead results in decreased sperm motility. In vivo exposure of mice to lead induces mitochondrial changes in SCs (Bizarro et al, 2003) and loss of normal testicular structure (Shafai et al, 2011).…”

“…Two studies have shown higher lead concentrations in semen from infertile men attending fertility clinics, as compared to fertile control subjects [Saaranen et al, 1987;Jockenhövel et al, 1990], but the reason for such difference is unclear. The concentrations found in seminal plasma may be compared to the high level of 0.25 µg/ml (1.21 µmol/l) which resulted in only slight decreases (not statistically significant) in bull sperm motility in vitro [Alexaki et al, 1990]. Thus, although occupational lead exposure seems to cause both an increased lead concentration in seminal plasma and a decrease in sperm quality, an overall association between the two parameters does not necessarily reflect a direct effect on sperm caused by lead present in seminal plasma.…”
